Biomethanisation plant for the organic fraction of municipal waste
Organic waste treatment plant at the Ibiza and Formentera Ecopark, with on-site engineering supervision provided by Grupotec for the GIREF joint venture — the concessionaire responsible for integrated waste management in the Pitiusas Islands — at the Ca Na Putxa Waste Treatment Centre, in Ibiza. The facility incorporates a biomethanisation line using anaerobic digestion, with a capacity to treat 20,000 t/year of the Organic Fraction from Separate Collection (FORM) and a further 20,000 t/year of sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), plus 13 composting tunnels for the management of digestate and plant waste from the island. The biogas generated —900 Nm³/h— is converted into electricity for on-site consumption at the plant itself, closing the loop: the organic waste produced by the residents of Ibiza is transformed into energy and high-quality compost. The project represented the first facility of its kind in the Pitiusas Islands, enabling Ibiza to comply with European legislation on recycling.
