Grupotec has started the construction of the biggest solar plant in Africa
Grupotec initiates the construction of one of the biggest solar plants in the African continent. The 100 MW solar plant located in the Kenian city of Eldoret is part of the country’s momentum to update its electric grid and to drive change to renewable energies in the fight against climate change.
The photovoltaic power station is made up of 293,100 solar panels with single-axis tracker which shall generate more than 192.800 MWh per year, thus diminishing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Grupotec is committed with local authorities to create jobs and to provide technical training to the inhabitants of Eldoret. Therefore, the local community has received this project with support and enthusiasm.
The EPC contract, which was signed with an European investment fund that has a long track record in the African continent, includes the design and turnkey construction of the solar plant, the booster substation and 220 kV high voltage overhead power line that shall connect the facility to the existing distribution network of Kenya Power and Lighting Company after signing the corresponding PPA (Power Purchase Agreement).
